About The Drawdown Framework

WHAT IS IT ?

Introducing Project Drawdown

Project Drawdown is a Californian Non-Profit Think Tank organization known as ‘The World’s Leading Resource for Climate Solutions’
Their mission is to help the world reach “Drawdown”— the point in the future when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline, thereby stopping catastrophic climate change — as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible.

The Drawdown Framework

At present the levels of Greenhouse Gases are rising dramatically beyond pre-industrial levels (as depicted in this chart from NASA).

Over recent millenia the levels of Greenhouse Gases have risen and fallen as nature’s balancing of this thin blanket of gases has changed.

We need to ‘Flatten the Curve’

We are all familiar with how the exponential growth of COVID-19 needed us to intervene to ‘flatten the curve’ to prevent disastrous consequences.  Whereas historically our level of emissions were balanced by Nature’s sinks, our post-industrial lifestyle has things out of balance.

We need to urgently bring this back into balance by reducing sources (emissions) and supporting sinks.

“DRAWDOWN”  is the point in the future when we ‘flatten the curve’ and achieve this balance.

It is when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline, thereby stopping catastrophic climate change.

The Drawdown Framework has been identifies the Climate Solutions that can help us achieve this balance point as as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible.

The Paris Agreement targets limiting Global Warming to +1.5C above pre-industrial levels. If we delay and if we hit ‘climate tipping points’ where things escalate out of control, we risk much higher levels of average temperature which in turn creates more frequent and more severe extreme weather, drought and flood conditions.

To reach Drawdown, we must work on all aspects of the climate equation—stopping sources and supporting sinks, as well as helping society achieve broader transformations. That is, three connected areas call for action, which we must pursue globally, simultaneously, and with determination.

1. Reduce Sources bringing emissions to zero

2. Support Sinks — uplifting nature’s carbon cycle

3. Improve Society — fostering equality for all

Nested within each area of action, there are sectors and subgroups of diverse solutions—practices and technologies that can help the world stabilize and then begin to lower greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. Together, they comprise the Drawdown Framework for climate solutions that has been developed with thousands of hours of scientific modelling and research by the research team at Project Drawdown.
